Alka Yagnik – The Mahaguru
Alka Yagnik dons the cap of the Mahaguru in this season of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs. It has been a mentor to the girls team for the 2009 season and found that in the past several seasons.
Alka Yagnik is formally trained in classical Indian music. She began singing at age six for Calcutta Radio. Alka Yagnik started singing for Hindi films with Payal Ki Jhankaar (1979). Then Laawaris (1981) and follow the song Mere Angana Mein earned him instant recognition. It was the song Ek Do Teen Film (1988) who finally saw the name of the surge in the popularity charts Alka Tezaab. The dance number featuring a young Madhuri Dixit Alka Yagnik also recovered a Filmfare Award for best singer-reading.
Alka Yagnik has sung in various languages, including Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, and of course, Hindi.
Adnan Sami was born, brought up and educated in London, United Kingdom. Sami began taking lessons from Pandit Shivkumar Sharma when visiting India during his school vacations. Indian singing legend Asha Bhosle spotted talent in a ten-year-old Sami at an R D Burman concert in London, and encouraged him to take up music as a career.
As a teenager, Sami, when performing on the sitar at a programme in Stockholm, was noticed by Keyboard Magazine as being the fastest man on keyboard in Asia. Sami went on to learn Indian classical music from Mahraj Khatak, a Pakistani classical singing teacher and dancer. At the age of sixteen, Sami was approached to write a song for famine-hit Ethiopia for which he won a special award from UNICEF.
Kailash Kher is an Indian singer of popular sufi music. He has recently risen to fame with a series of hits. After struggling in business, he took a shot at singing. After moving to Mumbai, the track Rabba Ishq Na Hove from the movie Andaaz was well received. In 2002, his song Allah ke Bande from relatively obscure movie Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II, made him a household name.
Kher has a uniquely soulful, raw, high-pitched voice. He sang a number of the songs in the Bollywood film Mangal Pandey: The Rising, in which he also had a cameo appearance. His other Bollywood appearances include the movie Corporate in the song ‘O Sikander’.
His song Teri Deewani from the album of the same name by his band Kailasa and especially the song Ya Rabba from the movie Salaam-e-Ishq has become a record-seller.
Javed Ali is an Indian playback singer. He has been singing in Hindi movies from 2000 but shot to fame in 2007 when he sang the song “Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein” from the movie Naqaab and thereafter another big hit “Jashn-e-Bahaara” from the movie Jodhaa Akbar (2008). He is currently one of the leading playback singers in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. His recent song, “Kilimanjaro” is currently holding the #1 position in the music charts.
